Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway

The natural habitat of the Grand Rounds has been preserved and maintained for generations and is treasured by city officials and the general public alike. You can hike, bike, stroll or ski this 51-mile trail that has been called the premier urban scenic byway in all of America. No amount of reading or research could ever do this byway justice, and the only way to experience all that this region has to offer is to pack up your gear and head out for an amazing day or two of exploration and adventure.

The Grand Rounds Byway is composed of:

Seven separate byway districts; each offering unique landscapes and special features that are not replicated elsewhere in the world

Twenty byway access areas from many interstates and major highways that are easily accessible for those that live in the Queen West condos.

More than fifty identified discovery areas; where the public has a chance to view amazing wildlife and various exhibits that are well cared for by the park staff. There is never an entry fee, or a long line to get it!

More than a dozen lakes and ponds, four premiere golf courses, two breathtaking waterfalls, natural as well as planned gardens, many creek and river views, and over 50 miles of hiking, biking, and driving paths.

Some of the many historical milestones include:

Designated as an official Minnesota State Scenic Byway in 1997. Scenic Byways are public roads that have special scenic, historical, recreational, cultural, as well as archeological qualities that have been recognized as such through official declaration and legislation. Scenic byways refer not only to the actual road or highway itself but also to the main corridor, including the Mississauga condominiums and businesses, through which it passes.

Recognized by the Federal Highway Administration and named the premier national urban scenic byway in 1998

Provided the key link in completing the Great River Road (1998)

Collaboration with the Hennepin History Museum brought fascinating new historical exhibits to the Longfellow House, the information center of the byway, in 2002. These exhibits feature everything from recycled bathroom furniture vanities to local arts and crafts
