Creating Curb Appeal

Many homebuyers judge a home based first on its outer appearance. In order to sell your home faster and get those potential buyers in the door, spend a little bit of time on the exterior of your home to give it that curb appeal that will get people interested in seeing the inside as well. Here are some easy tips on creating an attractive and alluring exterior that will give your home the curb appeal that you are after; so read on before you get out those gardening hand tools and start digging things up.

The most important first step is to come up with a plan. You want to have everything as consistent as possible, and you will want things to match and look put together, instead of having it look like you did some patch work jobs. Think about the whole picture; stand back and look at your home and see what stands out in both good ways and bad ways. This will give you some idea of where to begin, whether it is the front door color, or the landscaping.

If you have no idea how to do the landscaping, many landscape designers will actually come to your home for a quick consultation. And if you decide to hire them they will draw up a solid plan for your front yard that might include walking paths, patios and driveway treatments such as biosolids application as well as planting schemes. The cost for such a consultation is usually a few hundred dollars, so if you have the cash, this might be a wise way to go. If you do not, you can easily do this yourself with a little help from a friend with a green thumb.

Not all fixes need to involve heavy tools like web slings and bulldozers. Your upgrade could be as simple as painting the front door in a different color. This is a quick and easy thing you can do yourself, and many designers like to paint the front door a bright contrasting color and put out a big welcome mat. Or you could put a bench with some potted plants at your door, anything that says welcome and makes you feel as though you are arriving somewhere special and not just stepping up onto a stoop.

Downplay or dress up your driveway, depending on the condition that it is in. For many newer homes the long driveway is often the very first thing that you see. Yet this may not be the most welcoming thing for guests and buyers. It may be the most welcoming part of the home's exterior for your SUV, loaded with groceries and fabricated strainers, yet it should not be the focal point of the home. If your driveway is old and gray, you could easily stain it in another color, or paint it with black driveway paint to make it look newer than it is! Another idea is to line the sides of the driveway with shrubs or flowering bushes to draw the attention away from this slab of concrete.

Pay attention to the big picture, and do not forget about the details. This might mean purchasing new hanging baskets or bird feeders to put out. Shop around for the best deals and bargains when it comes to these little extra touches to save money; similar to purchasing aquarium test kits, do not go for the very first thing you see. The details include things like a nice clean edge on your lawn and filling in empty spaces with large container pots.

Once you have done these simple and quick touch-ups, your home will have the right kind of curb appeal that will help sell it much faster.
